The text presented here is an excerpt from the lengthy trial of Jews in Sandomierz accused of killing a Christian boy. The testimonies come from the first day after the body was discovered at the dawn of August 18th , 1710. They include three testimonies of the implicated Jews, the rabbi Jacob Herc, his thirteen-year-old son Abraham, and his seventeen-year-old son-in-law Jakub Schario and five additional testimonies of Christians. Soon, nine Sandomierz Jews were ordered arrested and sent to Lublin to be tried in the Crown Tribunal. During the trial, the rabbi’s son, Abraham, converted to Catholicism, six Jews died, and in November 1713, the rabbi and the remaining Jews were executed.

The first day testimonies capture a lot of movement of people, information, and rumors. It also provides three fascinating, if very problematic—given the nature of the source, Jewish ego documents, revealing the way Jews moved from place to place, either permanently or for business, and glimpses into everyday life.

As a side note, the first day also included a testimony of the person who might have been responsible for the boy’s death Augustynowiczowa—a woman who took care of the boy found dead near the rabbi’s house. Augustynowiczowa seems to have physically abused the boy and it might be that she inadvertently caused his death. Fearing consequences, she and her daughter may have dropped the body near Jacob Herc’s house. The 1698 trial of Jews accused of killing a Christian girl was still vividly remembered in town.

Qui quidem statute in liberis confassatis haec formalia recognoverunt. Et quidem primo infidelibs Abraham puer annorum tredecem.

I, Abraham Jakubowicz, son of the Infidel Jacob Herc, the Rabbi of Sandomierz, and of Getty, mother, was born in Pacanów, where my father, who was at the time a rabbi there, lived with my mother. I don’t know the reason why my father and mother moved to Sandomierz a few years ago, only it seems that because the city is more famous. And they still live here. [Father] made a living as a rabbi and he also had some eight thousand [zlotys] of his own money lending on interest, which he lost and now has barely two thousand. My father, being a rabbi, adjudicated cases worth no more fifty zlotys without appeal to a higher court. When the amount was higher, they went to Opatów and he stayed here. He did not go for any councils, and he did not hold any other office. He did not engage in the slaughter of cattle or chickens or geese—the beadle is responsible for that. [13r] Nothing was ever slaughtered at his place, because he only sat with books and if he needed something to eat, he would send for the beadle. And in this house, in which we have lived for half-a-year, I have never seen anyone slaughter anything, because it is not fitting for a rabbi. I have not seen any blood at any time or place, unless the slaughterer did it [splattered blood] while running away from the soldiers or for another reason. But I have not heard about it and I don’t know. I only remember some five or six weeks ago two chickens were slaughtered at our house to eat, but it was not done in the hallway. It is our custom to clean for Passover [Wielka Noc] tables, benches, windows in rooms so that no stain remains, and so, we did so at our house, where we had lived already by Passover. But such cleaning is less diligent in the hallway.

My father has not traveled anywhere for almost a year and no unacquainted Jews have visited him during that time. And I have not seen any secret planning.

My father and mother do not keep Catholics as servants. There is only one maid who brings water for cooking twice a day, but she does not live at my father’s. There also come some beggar women, and [13v] my father and mother would give them something, but I have not seen any boy, and I have not seen the one who died today.

And so this happened. We did not think about any escape. In the morning, the Jewish widow who lives at the house of Berko, a Sandomierz Jew, who is now in Gdańsk, was assisting my sister’s lying-in, went out in the back and saw the dead body, and so she notified my father, brother-in-law, and mother, who were still sleeping. My father and brother-in-law and myself rushed to the synagogue to confer, without even looking what it was, fearing that someone dropped an plague infected corpse [zapowietrzonego trupa], and leaving my mother behind. We did not even take anything not even a penny [szeląg]. (As we were leaving, no one spoke with my mother, and for my brother-in-law it was not appropriate to speak to his wife). We left through the gate near the Jewish Street without meeting anyone because people were still asleep. As I have said we did not take anything with us. I don’t know anything about pledges and where my father kept them, because I have been pouring over books [lit. sitting over books], and I don’t know if Mother hid anything because we did not see her after we had left. We walked without stopping anywhere across Wisełka and having crossed Wisełka onto Koćmierzów (this village belongs to the Honorable Lord Lukowski). [14r] We did not stop at the Castle brewery outside the town, and we did not meet anyone from the brewery, nor anyone along the road. When we arrived at Koćmierzów at the house of the Jewish arendar did not stay there more than an hour.

We left the town because of danger of an epidemic [dla niebespieczeństwa powietrza, lit. danger of air]. I do not know why we left Koćmierzów, where no one heard about an epidemic, maybe because of the father. Then, in Koćmierzów, the Jewish arendar, having taken the peasant’s horse and three sacks of malt, took us to Samborzec. And all three of us, with the Koćmierzów arendar as fourth, sat on top of the sacks. No Catholic was with us. And the Jew from Koćmierzów, having taken us to Samborzec, delivered the malt to a mill, and then took us to Gorzycany to the Jewish arendar [there], and left.

And we stayed in Gorzycany for four hours, and my brother-in-law and I ate [something] there, but by father was fasting. Then, we sat in a storeroom [with doors left] ajar, and father slept a little; from there we were supposed to go to Klimontów but the priest, having arrived with two men and opened the storeroom, took us saying: we are going to Sandomierz, and having tied us [14v] with one rope, they led us to Sandomierz and took us to the Castle.

As for the child, that he was supposedly killed, or that my father or brother-in-law or some other Jew supposedly killed the child, or that Jews have ever killed a Christian child, or slaughtered, I don’t know, I have not heard, et praeter haec plura se nescire allegavit [and besides these he said that he did not know more]

Post cuius quidem Infidelis Abraham Confessatorum depositionem rursus officium ad examen liberae confessionis infidelis Jacobi Scharis Infidelis Rabin Generi condescendit: Qui haec sequentia recognovit verba:

I am Jakub Schario. My father is a rabbi and [with] my mother they still live in Ołyka, four or five miles from Łuck;1 I was born in Ołyka and I lived with my father, and only three years ago I married the daughter of the Sandomierz Rabbi and during an epidemic I went back to my father, but alone, and when the epidemic passed in Sandomierz, I returned to my wife a year ago; and here in Sandomierz I have lived together with my wife’s father.

I don’t engage in any trade [handel], because according to the contract, my wife’s father has to provide food and clothing and there are still three years left before the expiration of this agreement.

And all this time I have been tending to studies and books in preparation to become a rabbi [15r]. All this time when I was in Ołyka and since I have been in Sandomierz I have not heard, nor have I ever read that we Jews had to kill Christian children, and what happened here in Sandomierz several years ago [in 1698]—I did not hear about it in Ołyka, I am only seventeen and in Sandomierz I heard that [something happened] several years ago, but I must have been a little [boy] then and I do not know if it is true.

My wife’s father lived on and fed us with what the [community] Elders [Starsi] pay him weekly, and second, he also lent on interest because it is not fitting for him to engage in any other trade. It is for him to adjudicate [cases] and he has some income from that. He does not hold any other office, because it is not fitting for him. As for slaughtering cattle, chickens, [and] geese, if one wants to eat [them] one has to send for the beadle, and he slaughters; I do not remember at all if any chickens were slaughtered in our house in the last weeks and I do not know why they would need to be. I have not seen any blood in the apartment in which we live now and in which Moshe the moneylender had lived before; I have not seen any [blood] and did not look for it so I do not know if there was any. If there is any [15v] it must be by accident, when the beadle carried a slaughtered meat, it may have dripped.

It is not only allowed but required to clean for Passover either the living quarters themselves [samą Izbę] or also the hallway. We cleaned the living quarters, in the hallway we did not see any blood, or did not notice.

My wife’s father does not leave Sandomierz, he stays here all the time; he has not traveled nor have any unacquainted Jews visited him. And if there is a visitor, he [the visitor] should go to the Elders, for a rabbi has nothing to offer. Neither have I seen any Sandomierz Jews to come for a consultation. We do not keep any Catholics in our house, we pay only one maiden, who brings water, but she lives in town. No poor children have served us or serve us. I have not seen the child, who is said to have been killed, alive or dead, and I do not know what happened to this child; only that this morning a woman, who helps my wife in her lying-in, went out to the back and, having noticed the corpse, woke up first my father and then my wife’s brother [16r] and they fearing an epidemic, left the town without taking anything. I was last to be woken up. And I, having noticed that Father and the little Brother were gone, went to the synagogue, looking for them, and when I did not find them, and not knowing where they went but remembering that I was once in Wielowieś for betrothal I run through the gate near the Jewish street, not even saying anything to my wife. And not stopping anywhere, nor seeing anyone, I run to Wielowieś, and I caught up with my wife’s Father and Brother, and we went to the Koćmierzów arendar, and, not staying long, [because] this arendar, fearing the epidemic, took four or five sacks of malt and took us and the malt to the mill in Samborzec. And the three of us sat on the sacks, and having dropped the malt at the mill, without seeing the Samborzec arendar, the Koćmierzów arendar took us to Gorzycany, and there we rested in a storage room at the house of the Gorzycany arendar, and we did not close [the door]. Neither me nor the Father ate anything because we were fasting, only the little boy ate, and we were about to leave Gorzycany [16v], the wagon was ready for us to go to Klimontów (but I do not know who arranged it because we did not leave the room, so it must have been the local Gorzycany arendar). And just as the three of us were talking, no one was sleeping, the priest arrived and, from the city, the townsman lord Borkowicz with another one, and they took us, saying “You had killed a child and ran away.” And having tied us up with one rope, they led us all together to the city and then to the Castle. Et praeter haec plura non recognouit [and beyond these, he did not recollect more].

Expeditis itaque hisce confessatis tandem Officium liberam recognitionem ab ipsomet Infideli Herc Rabino excepit: idque in hunc verborum illius sensum et tenorem.

I, Jakub Herc, come from Moravia [jestem rodem]. I am a son of Father Samuel and Mother Getle; during the Vienna [expedition, in 1683] I moved out of fear to Silesia with my wife, Getla, to whom I am still married. It’s been sixteen years since I came to Poland. And I first served as a rabbi in Pacanów for six or seven years, and then for the last ten years, [after] I had moved to Sandomierz, I have been here a rabbi, [17r] having moved from a smaller town to a bigger and more famous city.

I am almost fifty years old, I have never heard or read that we need Christian blood or to kill children, and if anything happens, they blame us but this is a calumny. I was not here in Sandomierz when Alexander was tried [in 1698], I only heard about it, but it was a calumny.

As a rabbi, I only engage with having to adjudicate and consider what is kosher and what is treyf, but it is not fitting for me to slaughter cattle or chicken or gees etc by myself. And if I need [meat] to eat, I send for a beadle. It is fitting to slaughter a chicken or goose in our house, as long as it is not in the living quarter, and it sometimes happened that the beadle would slaughter [at my house]; and living in this house, it sometimes happened, especially now that my daughter is bedridden, that the beadle would slaughter some ducks at home; he killed some [for] last sabbath, but I did not pay attention if there was any blood at home. And ifthere was [blood], it was probably because the beadle, having slaughtered the chicken pushes it so that the blood squirts. It is not necessary to clean the walls for the sabbath, except perhaps for Passover.

I do not attend any Jewish councils [17v] because I don’t belong to any. I do not have any acquiaintances [żadnego znoszenia się z Żydami] with Jews because I pour over books, and they can take council by themselves. Sandomierz Jews, such as Szmul and Jeleń, are still attending a [Jewish] Seym [council] in Raków. I heard one of them, Liczman, came back for the Sabbath, to check on his business, for he is an arendar but I do not know if he has left or not.

I did not scheme with anyone, nor would I think, to kill a Christian child. It is not right; and this calumny is heaped on us Jews because of hatred.

I do not keep Christians as servants. [There is] only one maiden, who brings water, but she lives in town, and when she brings water, I pay her. No Christian children come to my [house], and this, who is said to have been killed, I have not seen, alive or dead. But yesterday, not knowing anything we went to sleep, and this morning, I was still asleep when my wife—having found out I don’t know from whom—came to me and woke me up saying that there was a corpse lying in our [yard], I rushed out of fear, understanding that someone dropped an infected body, and I dressed hurriedly in what I could and not speaking to my wife [18r] fled from the town, while my wife began to wake others up. And I run, not stopping anywhere, nor speaking with anyone, only taking my son, who is here with me, to Koćmierzów.

I don’t know what happened to people’s pledges and my own possessions, because I don’t know where my wife hid things; I only kept a registry, but she knew where to hide [them].

My son-in-law caught up with me and my son in Zawisełcze [za Wisełką] on our way to Koćmierzów, as we were approaching the Koćmierzów arendar Jew. And it so happened that this arendar was going to the Samborzec mill and so I asked him to take us further toward Klimontów. I specifically went to Koćmierzów to get a wagon to Klimontów. And we climbed the wagon, where there were three or four sacks of malt, and we sat openly on top of the cart, not hiding. Then, as the arendarwas depositing the malt in the mill, he refused to carry us further, and so we went on foot, but then, having left the malt, he had pity on us and caught up with us with his wagon, we climbed it and he took us to the Jew arendar to Gorzycany. And we did not spend much time there and I asked the Gorzycany arendar [18v] to try to find a carriage [going] to Klimontów.2

I was fasting and did not eat anything, my son-in-law and my son ate something, and I took a nap. And having first spent some time in the living quarters and in the storage room, my son-in-law came with my son to the storage room, and we were about to leave. And then, the priest, who had arrived with two townsmen from Sandomierz, came into the storage room, which was unlocked and took us, saying “You have killed our Christian child,” and having tied us by the hands with a rope, they led us to Sandomierz, into town, and then took us to the Castle. Et praeter haec plura non recognovit [And beyond these he did not recollect any more]

Itaque primo Admodum Reverendus Albertus Koszycki [19v] Vicarius Ecclesiae Collegiatae Beatissimae Virginis MARIAE Sandomiriensi hanc spontaneam libere Officium praesens accedens fecit Relationem. [Therefore, approaching the present office first Reverend Albterus Koszycki, the vicar of the Collegiate Church of Mary the Virgin in Sandomierz freely made this spontaneous account]

I first heard about it today from the honorable judge of the Castle court, who has arrived to hear the inquiry regarding the Tribunal Decree, that when the honorable [judge] was on his way to the Church of Mary Magdalene, Sandomierz Jews, running past him, turned around, and complained about Sandomierz townspeople for having thrown a corpse near the synagogue and asking for justice against these townspeople. The honorable judge answered them, “If this was done by a private townsman, then they had to go to the magistrate court, and if it is needed, I will adjudicate it,” and he entered the church and Jews left.

Also on her way to the church, the housekeeper of his honorable judge’s manor, hearing this from a distance and wanting to know what had happened, went there [to the synagogue?] and having returned, she came with great astonishment to his honorable [20r] judge and said that the corpse was not dropped at Jews’ but that Jews themselves slaughtered the child, as marks [on the body] suggest.

And from then, the news spread, reaching the Reverend Priest Official of Sandomierz [Żuchowski] and the parish priest because the townspeople, having found the corpse and the wounds, first notified the honorable judge and, as directed, then appropriately notified the reverend priest official as a local pastor about the corpse and about how Jews, that is the rabbi with his son-in-law and his own son, had escaped.

The Reverend Priest Official immediately directed me to go to Andruszkowice and to Złota, asking for help, so that people could search for the fugitives in scrublands (as was rumored), and Lord Borkowicz, a Sandomierz burgher, also sent by the city to [assist in] the search, approached me in Złota running and saying, “I looked for the Jews in Koćmierzów and happened upon the Koćmierzów arendar who [20v] stopped with his wagon and when I asked where he had come from, he responded that he was carrying malt to Zajeziorze [a village not far from Samborzec] and when I investigated him some more about the Sandomierz Jews, he responded that he took them to Samborzec. And so having heard that, I, together with Lord Borkowicz, went to Samborzec and having arrived at the arenda we asked if the Koćmierzów arendar had been with some other Jews, [and the arendar answered] that he had been here and brought malt but he did not see any Jews.

And not finding them as if dictante spiritu sancto [with the holy spirit advising] we went toward Klimontów and we arrived to Gorzycany, where we came across a peasant from Gorzycany carrying flour from the mill and we asked this peasant if Jews, one old and two younger, passed through,, and the man responded, “I did not see them pass through but in the brewery there are some like the ones you, Sir, are asking about.” And so, we immediately went directly to the brewery, and it was already in the afternoon, and in the courtyard we found a wagon ready to go; in the meantime, having left Lord Borkowicz [watching] the wagon, I myself went into the living quarters and then to then to the chamber [komnata, 21r], and I ordered that it be opened and I found all three Jews who were getting ready to leave, and when I told them what they had done, they said nothing; and without delay, we took them, and they, and especially the son-in-law and the son had no hats and outerwear just yarmulkes, saying that this was how they had left Sandomierz. And having taken them, we went to the manor in Samborzec to prepare them and appropriately secure them [? dla opatrzenia y ich należytego doprowadzenia], andthe wife of the deputy starost [Pani Podstarościna]** said that the Koćmierzów Jew carried these Jews but two in sacks and the little one on top; and having tied them in Samborzec, we brought them to the Castle court.

I heard from the honorable lord judge that the deputy starost of Koćmierzów said to him that when these Jews had arrived in Koćmierzów and started babble something in Yiddish [szwargotać poczęli], one Koćmierzów Jewess put her hands on her head and said “I don’t want to know anything about it, I am leaving. ”

Secundo Nobilis Nicolaus Kaliszański Administrator Bonorum Koćmierzow spontanee recognovit [The second [witness] the nobleman Nicolaus Kaliszański, the administrator of the Koćmierzów estate, freely recounted]:

I was in the field when, before noon, Lord Zrazewski, the deputy starost from Smiechowice arrived with some other people [21v] and related what had happened in Sandomierz, asking for the Koćmierzów arendar, and [then wanting to] arrest him at my place on the grounds that he had carried the accused Jews. And when they left inquiring about them, I noticed that the Koćmierzow arendar was returning with an empty wagon. Having called him, I said that “you are to be arrested here. You drove the rabbi and his son-in-law and his son, and they slaughtered a child. Where did you take them?” He answered, “I was taking malt to the mill in Samborzec because I was afraid to go to Wisła so my horses would not be taken away. But it is true that I drove these Jews to Samborzec, and from there they went to Gorzycany. I do not know what had happened in Sandomierz, only it is our custom that when a rabbi comes or someone poor that it is an obligation to drive them.” And after that, I left a note for the deputy starost of Gorzycany to hold them. But in the meantime the reverend priest Koszycki tracked them down. And this is what I heard from the servants at the brewery that when these Jews arrived from Sandomierz and began to speak among themselves in Jewish, an old Jewess put her hands on her head [22r] and began to moan.

Tertio Honestus Nicolaus Miłosowicz Braxator recognovit libere [The third [witness], honest Nicolaus Miłosowic, the brewer, freely recounted].3

I was brewing beer in Koćmierzów and I saw these Jews when they arrived in the brewery, and they loitered around and I asked the little boy, “Where are you from?” And he said we are from the city, and then the arendar prepared the wagon and told us to put two sacks of malt, and the Jews had left toward the field before [the arendar]. And then, when the arendar returned, we told him about [what happened], and he responded: “This is my misfortune that I caught up with those Jews and took them on the wagon and drove them to Samborzec. Afterwards they went to Gorzycany.”

Quarto Famata Augustynowiczowa similter spontanee ad Officium praesens veniens retulit [Fourth [witness] the townswoman Augustynowiczowa similarly freely appearing before this Office recounted].

This dead [child] was an orphan. I don’t know where he was from [but] he went around begging. Out of mercy, I took him to my house several weeks ago. And then when he was wandering around the city and if he was gone for a long time, sometimes I would scold him [beat him?] for his wanderings and ask him where he had been, and he answered that among Jews collecting kindling wood, and I asked further if the Jews [22v] had given him anything. He responded that a Jewess had given him bread with butter, but he could not say which one.

And I admonished him not to go to Jews, telling [him] and [trying to] scare him that Jews had killed a girl. And for this reason [that he was wandering around], two or three weeks ago I sent him to school of the Virgin Mary.

Yesterday, that is on Sunday, I returned from church and not having found the boy [at home] I asked my daughter where Jurek [the boy’s name] was, and she said, “He was eating without saying a prayer. And I told him, ‘How can you eat without saying a prayer, my mother will beat you when she comes back from church, and he went away somewhere. ” And when around noon there was no sign of the boy, I began to gripe against the girl, “Why did you scare the boy? Go and look for him.”

She was searching for him all afternoon, in inns, which he frequented, but she did not find him. And we thought that soldiers took him. And then this morning twoburgher women, Lady Wronowiczowa and Wasilowska, came to me, asking about the boy. And when I answered [23r] that he was not here, they told me that he was [found] at the Jews’ , killed, and when I went with them to see this corpse at the rabbi’s, I recognized him. And I found the rabbi’s wife, who was bustling frightened and saying, “They tossed an infected corpse over the fence, and he got scratched in the blackthorn, and it seems that they threw stones at it.”

And then more people came and gawked, each saying that it obvious to see that the child was pricked [pokłóte]. And I then left the child and the Jewess, and went to Mr. Nowicki [the mayor] to complain against Jews about this, but they, that is Wolf Liczman and Czapnik [hatter] had been there ahead of me, complaining against me that I had been keeping an infected child and then I ordered it to be tossed, and when the mayor scolded me, I and other people who came with me said that the deceased child was not infected, but that Jews killed him, and then they [the mayor] asked me if I had been looking for the child [23v] and I told the truth, and to ascertain [that I was telling the truth] they sent for my daughter, who said in everyone’s presence how she was looking for [him] in inns, and then more people came and I went back home.

Quinto. Honestus Balsius Żmuda Civis Sandomieriensis retulit benevole [Fifth witness honestus Balsius Żmuda, a burgher of Sandomierz recounted willingly]

I was working in the brewery, which is on the Jewish street, next to Jew Czapnik’s house. And I came this morning to take care of the beer, and the beadle was running from house to house knocking to get people to the synagogue, and after he quickly run around and returned, passing by the Brewery and ran toward Czapnik’s house. Seeing him bewildered and [seeing] that Jewesses were coming out and babbling something in Yiddish [szwargotały], I asked what had happened among them, thinking that some soldiers arrived and did something, but this beadle responded, “It’s none of your business, I am going to an Elder,” and he went to Czapnik. And I, walking behind him, saw that some Jew [24r] [came] to Czapnik. I do not know him and do not know if he is from here or not. Old, graying, and he left the living quarters, and they were speaking with each other in Jewish in the hallway, I do not know about what. I did not see Czapnik. I then asked the beadle, “What was he talking about with that Jew?” And he responded, “It’s none of your business,” and then when people broke the news about the child’s killing, I again spoke to the beadle, who was passing by. I asked, you did not tell me anything. But he said, it is not a custom among us to talk but first to let the Elders know.

Sexto. Honestus Alexander Borkowicz Civis et Incola Sandomiriensis in haec formalia spontanee recognovit. [Sixth. Honestus Alexander Borkowicz, citizen and inhabitant of Sandomierz, with these formally and spontaneously recounted]

This morning I came to Mr. mayor, my step father, where I found Sandomierz Jews, Wolf Liczman, Czapnik, and the beadle. They complained that someone dropped off an infected corpse, asking to bury this corpse because people were going to be afraid, [saying] there was no benefit for it to be lying for too long. And hearing this, I went there with other townspeople to take a look; and then having returned, and seeing Jews [still there] I said it was not true that the child died of an epidemic infection [z powietrze, lit. from the air] but that it was slaughtered by Jews.

When Jews heard this, they became sheepish and terrified; Wolf changed, once he was pale, then red. And when it became known that Jews were running away, I took a horse and chased after them, and I caught up with Abusia’s son-in-law, who was carrying a box and running away. And I brought him back to Sandomierz. And then, seeing that the rabbi with his son-in-law and son, in whose house the murdered child was found, had run away, I went to the arendar near the castle and, to get the horses faster, I said, “The Honorable Burgrave ordered that you give me a horse.” And I asked him about the Jews, the rabbi, and his son and son-in-law [25r]. This arendar pointed [?] and said, “this rabbi came to my place but left not too long ago for Koćmierzów.” And I immediately went to the mill in Koćmierzów. And it could be that they went there or toward Zajeziorze. And so I went toward Zajeziorze and then I saw in Złota from afar a wagon going toward Koćmierzów. And I turned around toward the wagon and began to yell, “Stop, stop!” But when he did not heed, I cut him off: and then seeing the Jew, Koćmierzów arendar, I asked for information, “Where did you take the rabbi and others?” And he, being a bit stumped, responded that [he had taken them] to Samborzec. And hearing in Złota that the reverend priest Koszycki [was there], I told [25v] him that, and we went to Samborzec. And there, in the brewery, we asked about them [Jews]. Butthe arendar said, “They have not been here, I only heard that the Koćmierzów arendar brought malt to the mill. And then sent the lackey of his Reverend Priest Official on a different route, and I, along with the reverend priest Koszycki, went toward Gorzycany. And there we came across a peasant carrying flour from the Gorzycany mill, and we asked this peasant about these Jews, and he said that there were three new Jews, one old and two young at the arenda in Gorzycany; they had arrived not too long ago.

When we learned that, we went directly to Gorzycany and having gone into the storage room, whose door was left ajar, we found the rabbi, his son-in-law, and his son, who were getting ready to leave, since their wagon was ready. And as we began to arrest them, this little Jew [Żydek] who had come to take them, run away [26r] with the wagon. And after we had taken them in Gorzycany, we stopped in the manor in Samborzec to secure the prisoners better, and we borrowed a rope, and the wife of the deputy starost said that the Samborzec arendar was greatly cursing reverend Koszycki, and she said, “It must be true that Jews had done it, when they were brought to the Samborzec mill in sacks.”

From Samborzec we took all three Jews to Sandomierz and her we delivered them to the Castle for voluntary confessions. Quae praemissa relata Officium praesens Actis suis connotavit. [And thus, and in no other way, he reported to the present office what he had seen and heard. These above reports the present Office inscribed in its records].

Qui quidem statute in liberis confassatis haec formalia recognoverunt. Et quidem primo infidelibs Abraham puer annorum tredecem.

Tam tedy w Koćmierzowie Żyd Arendarz wziąwszy chłopskich koni y trzy wory słodu powiósł nas do Samborca, a my wszyscy trzech y czwarty Arendarz Koćmierzowski siedzieliśmy na worach na wierzchu, a Katolika żadnego niebyło z nami, a tam do Młyna w Samborcu Żyd ten Koćmierzowski nas przywiozszly złożył słod w młynie, a nas znowu odwiosł do Gorzycan do Arendarza Żyda, a sam nazad odiechał: tam w Gorzycanach bylismy ze cztery godziny, y tam ia z Szwagrem iedlismy, bo Ociec by postem a potym w Komorze przywartey siedzieliśmy a Ociec troche spał, gdyż ztamtąd mielismy iechać do Klimontowa, a tym czasem Xiądz z dwiema ludzmi nadiechawszy otworzywszy komorę wzięli nas mowiąc: podzcie do Sandomierza, y tak w iednym powrozem zwią[14v]zawszy nas razem prowadzili nas do Sandomierza y to do Grodu stawili. Żeby zas to Dziecię miało być zabite, albo żeby moy Ociec lub Szwagier ie zabili albo kto inny z Żydów albo żeby Kiedykolwiek Żydzi Chrześciańskie dziecię bili, y zarzynali, tego niewiem y niesłyszałem, et praeter haec plura se nescire allegavit.

Post cuius quidem Infidelis Abraham Confessatorum depositionem rursus officium ad examen liberae confessionis infidelis Jacobi Scharis Infidelis Rabin Generi condescendit: Qui haec sequentia recognovit verba:

Expeditis itaque hisce confessatis tandem Officium liberam recognitionem ab ipsomet Infideli Herc Rabino excepit: idque in hunc verborum illius sensum et tenorem.

Zięć moy y z synem coś tam iedli, a aim troche usnął. A potym roznie się po izbie y po komorze przechodząc, tenże zięc moy y z synem przyszli do komory, y iuż mieliśmy niedługo iechać: Az też Xiądz y z dwiema Mieszczan z Sandomierza przyiechawszy przez Izbę przysli do komory ktora była nie zamknięta y zaraz nas pobrali powiedaiąc Żeście wy Nasze Dziecię Chrześciańskie zabili, y związawszy nas wszystkich trzech postronkiem iednym za ręce wiedli nas do Sandomierza do Miasta y tu nas przyprowadzili do Grodu.

Itaque primo Admodum Reverendus Albertus Koszycki [19v] Vicarius Ecclesiae Collegiatae Beatissimae Virginis MARIAE Sandomiriensi hanc spontaneam libere Officium praesens accedens fecit Relationem.

Secundo Nobilis Nicolaus Kaliszanski Administrator Bonorum Koćmierzów spontanee recognovit. Ja go zawoławszy mowiłem do niego ześ tu u mnie aresztowany.

Tertio Honestus Nicolaus Miłosowicz Braxator recognovit libere. Jam robił w Koćmierzowie Piwo y widziałem tych Żydów kiedy byli w Browarze, y kręcili się y pytałem się chłopca małego z kądeście wy powiedział my nie z Miasta a potym Arendarz zgotował woz y kazał nam włożyć dwa worki słodu, a oni przedtym Ci Zydzi iuż byli wyszli w Pole, a potym gdy Arendarz powrócił mowiliśmy mu koło tego a on odpowiedział: Moia nieszczęśliwośc żem tych Żydów dogoniwszy wziął na Woz y odwiozłem ich do Samborca a potym poszli do Gorzycan.

Quarto Famata Augustynowiczowa similiter spontanee ad Officium praesens veniens retulit. Jam go napomniała aby niechodził do Żydów powiadaiąc y strasząc go ze tu też Żydzi dziewczynę zabili y dla tego niedziel temu dwie albo trzy zaleciłam go do szkoły Panny Maryi.

Quinto. Honestus Balsius Żmuda Civis Sandomieriensis retulit benevole.

Sexto. Honestus Alexander Borkowicz Civis et Incola Sandomiriensis in haec formalia spontnee recognovit. Przyszedłem dziś z rana do Pana Burmistrza Oyczyma mego gdzie zastał Żydów Sandomierskich Wolfa Liczmana y Czapnika y Szkolnika . Quae praemissa relata Officium praesens Actis suis connotavit.
