Introduction
The following Judeo-Italian poem for Purim entitled Diamo gloria al Creator דייאמו גלורייאה אל קריאטור (“Let us give Glory to the Creator”) is contained in a manuscript anthology of elegies in Hebrew (Likkute zemirot u-renanim), preserved in Ms. 4104 at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, fols. 45r-46r. The manuscript was copied in 1752 by Shlomo ben Yeḥiel Ḥay Vital z”l in Ragusa, to be identified with Dubrovnik in Croatia (rather than Ragusa in Sicily). To my knowledge, no annotated editions or translations of this poem are known. A printed edition of a variant of the poem (Zemer li-seʿudat Purim) without date and place (but probably printed in Venice or Mantua) is mentioned by Steinschneider in his Catalogus Librorum Hebraeorum in Bibliotheca Bodleaiana, which, according to Asher Salah, was composed in honor of the physician Yosef Conegliano, active in Padua and Venice during the eighteenth century.
The joyful composition – to be sung before the Birkat ha-Mazon on the festival meal of Purim – commands everyone to celebrate the victory of Esther and Mordekhai over Haman by observing the four mitzvot of Purim:
- Mikra megillah: the reading of the megillah (§ 7);
- Se‘udat Purim: have a sumptuous festival meal with good food and wine (§ 5, 13-15, 21);
- Matanot le-evyonim: give money or food to the needy (§ 6 and 11);
- Mishloach manot: give gifts of food or drinks to friends and relatives (§ 12).

Introduction to the translation:
I decided not to translate the Hebrew words appearing in the original composition to keep some of the original rhymes. Their meaning is provided in brackets. Similarly, some Italian words referring to currencies and units of measurement are not translated into English but they are explained in the footnotes.
English translation:
Poem preceding Birkat ha-Mazon (Blessing after Meals) on Purim
[1] Let us give glory to the Creator,
song, praise, and honor
Who from Haman the traitor
vanquished the fierce rigor.
Let us give glory to the Creator.
[2] Let us celebrate with simḥah (happiness)
And say loud the berakhah (blessing)
That victory and hatzlaḥah (success)
The Prime Mover gave us.
Let us give glory to the Creator.
[3] Oh, zqenim (elderly) and ne’arim (young people),
Be cheerful on Purim!
Baḥurot (girls) and baḥurim (boys),
All rejoice with love.
Let us give glory to the Creator.
[4] Whoever has milḥamah (lit. war),
They should throw it ba-adamah (on the soil),
Without paḥad (fear) and emah (horror),
Let us banish rigor.
Let us give glory to the Creator.
[5] In spite of Haman, Good wine and bread
‘ofot (chickens) and marzipan
Let us eat with a good heart.
Let us give glory to the Creator.
[6] Let us console the ‘aniyim (poor ones)
And the shvuyim (prisoners)
So that shalom u-shnot ḥayyim (peace and life)
The Great Rector will give us.
Let us give glory to the Creator.
[7] The ḥatan (groom) to the challah (bride)
After reading the megillah
He should go with ma‘alah (honor)
To bring her flowers.
Let us give glory to the Creator.
[8] And if he (?) finds
A nice gown with a tail,1
To say this clearly,
He should gift her with love.
Let us give glory to the Creator.
[9] With money and quattrini2
Cheering up the children
With doughnuts and candies
Putting them in a good mood.
Let us give glory to the Creator.
[10] With the drum and clapping hands,
Give them the manna3 [?]
Despite that dog4
Let them make a lot of noise.
Let us give glory to the Creator.
[11] Offer to the robitim (teachers, rabbis)
Some bags of zecchini5
The thought of bread and wine
Let them think about.
Let us give glory to the Creator.
[12] Give nice gifts
To friends and relatives
And with musical of instruments
Let us give glory to the Lord.
Let us give glory to the Creator.
[13] This is the beautiful precept
To be with joy and delight
And, I say, the most favorite one
Is enjoying tasteful food.
Let us give glory to the Creator.
[14] After singing,
And opening the chest,
It will be possible to prepare
Several kinds of liquor.
Let us give glory to the Creator.
[15] Comforted and happy,
Ban all the torments,
And, with frequent toasts,
Make the heart rejoice.
Let us give glory to the Creator.
[16] Mordekhai of great doctrine,
Together with Esther, the wise queen,
Ordered that everyone bows
And observe [Purim] in this way.
Let us give glory to the Creator.
[17] If we will do so,
We will have great wealth
Every day we will be
With silver and gold.
Let us give glory to the Creator.
[18] Then we have the havtaḥah (certainty)
To always have the berakhah (blessing)
Shalom (peace) and hatzlaḥah (success)
For us, people of treasures.
Let us give glory to the Creator.
[19] The virtue of constance
Is having hope in Him
This is the strongest spear (?)
Against vice and terror.
Let us give glory to the Creator.
[20] This is the true sustenance
Be a man every hour
Careful and serve with a happy heart
Who gives us vigor.
Let us give glory to the Creator.
[21] Now we say the berakhah (blessing)
To the gotto make the hadaḥah (cleaning)6
With shashon (joy) and simḥah (happiness)
Let us exalt the great Giver.
Let us give glory to the Creator.

Notes to the text:
The poem is composed of 21 stanzas of quartine. With the exception of the first (AAAA) and the twentieth stanzas (BABA), the composition follows the metric of serventese7 (BBBA). Each stanza is followed by the refrain “Diamo Gloria al Creator” (A). While most of the composition is in Judeo-Italian, occasionally, Hebrew words are incorporated at the end of the verses to achieve rhyming. These Hebrew words are emphasized in cursive font throughout the text.

I am inclined to translate this as manna (referring to the food provided by God to Moses and the Israelites in the desert), rather than mano (“hand”). ↩

A large glass with a handle, mostly used in the region of Veneto. In Venice, the gotto was also used as a unit of measurement. The gotto represented a capacity of 19 deciliters, which is slightly less than 8.4535056755 cups in the United States). The reference to cleaning the gotto implies the act of emptying it and enjoying the wine contained within. ↩
